Minister for Museums, Heritage and Gambling visits Chi Onwurah MP to discuss plans to make the Swing Bridge ‘swing’ again
Chi Onwurah MP invited Baroness Twycross, Minister for Museums, Heritage and Gambling, to Newcastle Central and West to consider plans to make the Swing Bridge ‘swing’ again.
Chi Onwurah MP showed Baroness Twycross the Swing Bridge, explained current issues with the Swing Bridge’s mechanism, the ownership, and plans to fix the Bridge with modern technology. The MP and Baroness agreed on the importance of Northern industrial heritage.
Campaigning for this restoration over the past 3 years, Chi has gathered a range of stakeholders, who have been examining the complex fix needed to fully restore this regional icon.
Baroness Twycross agreed that the Swing Bridge was an important and unique part of Britain’s industrial heritage and an inspiration for future generations.
Chi Onwurah MP said:
“The Swing Bridge is an important part of world engineering history, and inspiring to the next generation of engineers and technologists.”
“We know what is structurally needed to complete the restoration, and now I am hopeful that with the support of Baroness Twycross, other colleagues, and many local, regional, and national stakeholders, we will get the bridge swinging again.”
