Chi Onwurah MP, said: “Every year, commuters are being asked to pay more money for bad train services.
“The government has sat back and allowed private train companies to cash in while people’s pay has been held back. Continuous fare rises undermine urgent action to tackle the climate emergency by pricing people off the railway.“
“Labour will cap fares bring our railways into public ownership so they are run in the interests of passengers, not private profit.”
Chi Onwurah MP for Newcastle Central has called for more investment into public transport.
Recent figures show that a Season Ticket between Newcastle and Berwick will have increased by 40% between 2010 and 2020 and a Season Ticket between Thornaby and Newcastle will have increased by 43% between 2010 and 2020.
Asking the Minister of State for Transport to explain why the cost of public transport is so high outside of London,
Chi asked:
“Will the Minister seek his advice on why it costs more to take a bus four stops up the West road in Newcastle than it does to travel across the entire Greater London area?”
Ms Onwurah has highlighted the need for more investment in to the East Coast Mainline as well as regional stations and bus services. Ms Onwurah has called for more powers over public transport to be allocated locally.
Chi Onwurah MP has been campaigning for more investment and powers to be given to the North of Tyne combined Authority.
