Chi demands Government response to Spicer Review of Operation Sanctuary

Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah has pressed the Government for a response to the recommendations of the recent Serious Case Review into sexual abuse in Newcastle.

The review, which was led by retired barrister David Spicer and published last month, praised the work of the police force and other local government agencies while also making a number of recommendations to improve support for victims of these appalling crimes.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday morning, Chi said:

“The Serious Case Review into the appalling sexual abuse of girls and vulnerable adults in Newcastle was published last month and whilst generally praising the actions of local authorities and police it did raise significant concerns about the way in which victims of these appalling crimes were supported and made to relive harrowing experiences.”

She then asked:

“Will the Minister be responding directly to the recommendations of the Spicer Review?”

In his response, Dr Philip Lee, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice, acknowledged the Serious Case Review, saying:

“I thank the Honourable Lady for her question, the Department is aware of course of this Serious Case Review concerning sexual exploitation of children and the details are shocking. We’re looking, as are all agencies involved, at ways to continually improve our service.”

Pressed by Chi to answer her question, he continued:

“I will be writing to her with regards to whether we will be responding directly.”
