Chi asks is Ashburton Village the only fully independent shopping area in Britain
Chi Onwurah MP for Newcastle Central as part of the Independent Retail Traders month of July visited Ashburton Village, Gosforth NE3 4XN to celebrate its diversity of independently owned and run shops.
Chi said:
“ Ashburton village may now be the only shopping area to offer everything shoppers need but without any shops owned by the national chains.
“ Is it the only such truly independent retail area to be found in Britain?
Ms Onwurah is delighted the area offers such a full range of independent stores and services including a butcher, grocer, news agent, cafe, pharmacist and a variety of other stores and services all of whom trade under their own names without any linkage to any major brands.
She met with several shop owners to learn about how they know most residents and work together with the residents association to preserve the community spirit.
Chi certainly believes Ashburton Village is a hidden gem and well worth visit to see the variety and the difference on offer.
