Chi Onwurah MP for Newcastle Central and Shadow Minister for Innovation & Science said:
“ Like most people in Newcastle I am shocked and deeply saddened by the announcement that Sanofi is to close its pharmaceutical plant in Fawdon with the loss of 450 jobs. Growing up in Kenton I knew just how important to people in Newcastle the Winthrops works were”.
Ms Onwurah believes this is a major blow to manufacturing in the North East.
She firmly believes that unless Government makes a much stronger commitment to manufacturing, to enable investment in new products and new manufacturing plant here and across the UK, then more tragic closures are likely in the future.
